1300 acres, nestled in the quiet swamps of Vermilion Parish along the Vermilion River, Palmetto Island State Park is surrounded by water and indigenous palmettos that it was named for.

           The park offers 6 two bedroom cabins, 95 campsites, 4 picnic pavilions and numerous picnic sites, a nature center, water playground,  a boardwalk over looking the Vermilion River, a group primitive campsite, 2 play grounds, nature center, 4 backpack tent sites and 2 nature trails. A boat launch provides access to the river for fishing and boating, while 3 interior lagoons allow canoers and kayakers an up-close look at the native plant and animal life. Palmetto Island also houses a multipurpose room that can be rented for meetings, weddings, family gatherings and other similar events.

Park Hours of Operation

  • Gates are open : 7 a.m. - 9 p.m. (Sunday-Thursday) and                       7 a.m. - 10 p.m. (Friday & Saturday).
  • Entrance station is open:  8 a.m. - 5 p.m. (Sunday-Thursday) 8 a.m.-10 p.m. (Friday & Saturday). All park sites close at 10 p.m. on Friday, Saturday and days preceding holidays.
  • Entrance Fees: $3 per person; Free for Seniors (62 and older) and children age 3 and under.
  • Canoe rentals are $25 per day or $7 per hour.
  • The Splashpad is open April - September, Tuesday – Sunday from      8 a.m. - 8 p.m.
